University of Ljubljana

After the Spring of Nations in 1848, and the March revolution that hit the Habsburg Empire, the demand to found a Slovene university was an integral part of the Slovene political programme. But the Austrian authorities turned a deaf ear to this demand until the fall of the monarchy in 1918. Before the collapse of the monarchy Slovene students had therefore studied in Vienna, Graz and Prague, and also in Krakow in the decade before the First World War. After the collapse of the monarchy Slovene students were no longer able to study at Austrian universities, and Slovene lecturers were increasingly being dismissed from their posts. Primarily thanks to a small circle of influential men (Karel Verstovšek, a politician, Danilo Majaron, a lawyer, and Mihajlo Rostohar, a professor at Charles University in Prague), and with the support of political parties, on 16 July 1919 the provisional parliament in Belgrade voted for a law establishing a university in Ljubljana in the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, which began functioning in December of the same year.

The founding of the University of Ljubljana made it easier to get the chance to study, and established the foundation for the development of the sciences in Slovenia. Slovene students who had had to study abroad, Slovene lecturers and other Slovene academics working abroad returned to the homeland, and began systematically improving Slovene humanities under the wings of their alma mater, introducing Slovene terminology and independently developing social sciences and natural sciences. The University of Ljubljana evolved rapidly over the decades, and earned a central place in Slovene academic and cultural life.

To mark the centenary of the founding of the University of Ljubljana, the Republic of Slovenia is issuing a commemorative coin. The design is based around the University of Ljubljana logo. The image of the façade in the logo is replaced with the inscription 100 let Univerze v Ljubljani (100 years of the University of Ljubljana), which sits on a distinctive full square design.
