In 2009, the countries of the euro area issued a new series of common €2 commemorative coins to mark the 10th anniversary of the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU).

The coin features a stick figure merging with the "€" symbol. This conveys the concept of the single currency—and, in a broader sense, the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU)—as the final step in the long process of European trade and economic integration. The coin is issued by every country in the euro area; it bears the name of the issuing country (not shown here) and the inscription "EMU 1999–2009" in the language(s) of that country. This design was selected from five shortlisted options by European Union citizens through an online vote. It was created by George Stamatopoulos, a sculptor at the Bank of Greece’s mint. The 12 stars of the European Union are arranged on the outer ring of the coin.

All euro coins feature a common European side and a distinct national side. On all German euro coin denominations, the twelve stars of the EU flag are depicted, along with the year of issue and the country code—the letter "D". Coins from five different mints – A, D, F, G, J:

·  A (Berlin Mint – "Staatliche Münze Berlin")

·  D (Munich Mint – "Bavarian State Mint")

·  F (Stuttgart Mint – "Staatliche Münzen Baden-Württemberg") *

·  G (Karlsruhe Mint – "Staatliche Münzen Baden-Württemberg") *

·  J (Hamburg Mint – "Hamburgische Münze")

*This minting entity was established in 1998 through the merger of the Karlsruhe and Stuttgart mints. Despite the merger, the two previously separate mints retained their respective mint marks: "F" for Stuttgart and "G" for Karlsruhe.
