San Marino 2026 450th anniversary of Titian’s death
The obverse of the coin depicts an allegory inspired by one of the frescoes or celestial compositions characteristic of Titian’s style. In the center, a draped female figure, seated on a cloud, occupies the main space. She holds a long strip of fabric or a scroll, perhaps a symbol of knowledge or art. Her face, turned to the right, expresses concentration, serenity, and grace. As such, this representation embodies the spiritual elevation often associated with the painter’s works.
The background features soft, dynamic shapes that enhance the sense of movement and lightness. Around the scene are the inscriptions “TIZIANO” on the left, “SAN MARINO” at the top, and “1576 • 2026” on the right, indicating the artist’s death date and the year of issue. The letter “R,” marking the Rome mint, appears discreetly to the right of the composition. Furthermore, the initials “SL,” likely those of the engraver, appear at the bottom. The outer border is adorned with the twelve stars of the European Union, signifying San Marino’s integration into the European numismatic program.
