Slovakia 2026 50th anniversary of the Czechoslovak national football team’s victory at the 1976 European Championship

The 2 euro commemorative coin 2026 from Slovakia marks 50 years since Czechoslovakia won the 1976 European Football Championship. In the final of the UEFA Euro 1976, Czechoslovakia defeated West Germany national football team in a penalty shootout. The decisive penalty by Antonín Panenka became legendary and gave its name to the famous “Panenka” technique. The coin honors this historic sporting achievement.

The design depicts a footballer in right profile dribbling the ball. He is flanked by two laurel branches. The curved inscription ‘MAJSTRI EURÓPY 1976’ runs from between the player’s feet up the inside of the right branch. On either side of the stem of the left branch are the initials ‘MH’ of the designer, Matěj Hanuš, and the mint mark of Slovakia’s Kremnica Mint (the letters ‘MK’ between two dies). At the bottom, separated by a line from the central motif, is the name of the issuing country ‘SLOVENSKO’ and the year of issuance ‘2026’. The coin’s outer ring bears the 12 stars of the European flag.
