Portugal 2026 Calouste Gulbenkian foundation
Founded in 1956, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation marks its 70th anniversary; it is one of Portugal’s most significant institutions in the fields of art, science, education, and philanthropy. This commemorative coin honors the Foundation’s contribution to cultural and civic life; its design was inspired by a classical legacy—the collection of Greek coins assembled by Calouste Gulbenkian—as well as the diversity of Mediterranean cultures.
At the center of the coin is a four-horse chariot, the emblem of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. Arranged in an arc at the top are the inscriptions “FUNDAÇÃO CALOUSTE GULBENKIAN,” “ARTE • BENEFÊNCIA • CIÊNCIA • EDUCAÇÃO” (the Foundation’s four core areas of activity), and the years “1956–2026.” On the bottom right is the mint mark “CASA DA MOEDA”; in the center, the national coat of arms and the inscription “PORTUGAL”; and on the left, the designer’s name, “PEDRO CARVALHO.” The outer edge of the coin features 12 five-pointed stars, symbolizing the European Union.
