France 2019 Asterix Obelix
This 2-euro commemorative coin, issued in France in 2019, marks the 60th anniversary of the French comic book series *The Adventures of Asterix*. The first comic in the series appeared in 1959 in the magazine *Pilote*, and a total of 45 books had been published by 2017. Asterix, a resident of a Gaulish village, is the series' main protagonist; together with his friend Obelix, he embarks on various adventures across ancient Europe, Egypt, and other lands.
The coins were issued in three different numismatic cards (featuring Asterix, Obelix, and Dogmatix/Idéfix), with a mintage of 100,000 units for each design.
The center of the coin's obverse depicts the main character, Asterix. At the top, the inscription "ASTÉRIX" appears alongside the letters "RF" (an abbreviation for *République Française*). Between them is the year of issue, "2019". The outer ring of the coin features the twelve stars of the European Union.
